Sentence Patterns and Grammatical Explanations

我得穿很正式吗?

Wǒ děi chuān de hěn zhèngshì ma?

Should I get dressed very formally?

您筷子用非常好。

Nín kuàizi yòng de fēicháng hǎo.

You use chopsticks very well.

These two sentences use “the complement of state” to describe or comment on the achieved state of an action. In this kind of sentence, the structural particle “得” must be placed between the verb and the complement of state. The complement of state is usually formed by an adjective or an adjectival phrase.
